July 17-26
First Ever - Garbagefish Tournament - Skates, Dogfish & Sea Robins
Ocean and Atlantic Counties
www.GARBAGEFISH.COM for rules, garbageman@garbagefish.com
$20 to enter, 10% of entry fees benefit Re-Clam the Bay, 90% to prizes. Dogfish, skate, and sea robins, among others, prey upon the young of nearly all species including striped bass, fluke, weakfish, blue fish, black drum, and even important bait fish such as bunker, mullet and herring, among others. The tournament is to show these "garbage species" are tasty, viable food fish. (Two skates on the dinner table will no longer be chowing down on the young of more desirable fish.)
From the tournament sponsor:
So why do people throw these fish back? Why are they labeled a nuisance fish? How did that ever happen? Why on earth do they call something so delicious, "garbage?"
One, they are not as easily cleaned as our preferred game fish. Don't despair, however, it can be done and it's really not that hard.
Two, there's so many of them because most people throw them back.
